Host City Volunteers (HCV) was an innovative project designed to enable people from within Glasgow to have access to volunteering opportunities associated with the Commonwealth Games. The focus was on recruiting nearly 1,100 people from diverse backgrounds who had limited opportunities previously to volunteer and give them a chance to be 'ambassadors' for the city. During the Games, the HCVs helped to direct people to key venues and locations and provided information about the city to visitors and residents.
Our research with the HCVs is unique.
The initial research, on behalf of Glasgow Life, has involved surveys before, during and after the event with the HCVs and included interviews with 26 volunteers as they prepared for their roles, took part in the Games and as they reflected on the benefits to them and their futures.
We have also been conducting follow on research with the HCVs since the 2014 Games, identifying their changing patterns of volunteering, exploring their motivations for volunteering, and their different levels of social connectedness through being a HCV.
On these pages, we identify not only the key findings from the surveys and the research but also some of the stories of those involved with the interviews - illustrating their contribution to the event, and the ways in which the opportunity to be volunteer has had a lasting impact on them.
